This technical note gives basic information about how to use LapSnapper Lap Timing System in the RC.

LapSnapper Lap Timing System for RC product includes all required components for two RC cars except Android smart device. The system includes 2 pcs LapSnapper transponders and 2.0 m or 2.4 m wide start/finish line. You will need more transponders, if you have more than two RC cars. There are no limit in the system for the amount of transponders. You will need more magnetic strip modules, when the race track is wider than 2.0 m/2.4 m or you want to have sector lines.

Normally timing operator is few ten of meters away from the start/finish line. The recommended distance from the start/finish line to the LapSnapper Decoder is 7 to 10 m. LapSnapper Decoder has to be connected to the Android device and timing operator uses Android device. This creates a situation, where we have to expand distance between Android device to LapSnapper Decoder. The distance can be expanded by using USB 2.0 expansion cable (Max. 30 m) or USB 2.0 RJ45 extender (Max. 50 – 100 m).

External display(s) can be added to the system by connecting it to the HDMI connector of Android device.

WiFi network is not mandatory in basic setup but it is required, when LapSnapper Client Software are used for receiving measured lap times to Android smart phones of audience or the wireless printer are used for printing race result to the paper. WiFi network can be build by WiFi router or by creating WiFi hotspot by using any smart device.

The race results can be printed to the paper by using wireless printer. It requires the printer and Android printer application from manufacturer. Printer applications are available in Google Play Store.

LapSnapper magnetic strips to be installed to the start/finish line and sector lines. Sector lines are optional. Magnetic strips are normally embedded into asphalt, concrete or ground. Magnetic strips can be also installed above the start/finish line and sector lines by using special stand. It is required a groove to the asphalt or concrete, when magnetic strip is installed into asphalt or concrete . Recommended size of groove is 15 mm x 35 mm (W x H). The length of groove is as long as your race track is wide. The groove can be made by using wall chaser (For example: Makita SG150 Wall Chaser) or grinder. Magnetic strips can be fixed to groove by using glue. Example about usable glue is Soudal Fix All High Tack. Estimated consumption of Soudal Fix All High Tack is about 1 pcs/m.

LapSnapper magnetic strip modules should be installed to a row and a narrower edge upwards. A wider edge can be also installed upwards, when total height of the magnetic strip need to be optimized. This shortens slightly the magnetic strip detection distance of the transponder. Magnetic strip modules have to reject each others, when the modules are set in a row. Magnetic strip modules have the matching points, which are meant for helping the installation. Installation has been done correctly, when the matching points are side by side in the parallel modules. Double magnetic strip will be done by installing two LapSnapper Magnetic Strips side by side.

LapSnapper supports an LapSnapper Server, which makes it possible to connect third party applications to the LapSnapper such as own lap time measurement applications, third party race management software, scoreboards, etc.
